Hector’s Story: 12 Years of Waiting…
In honor of Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day, we’re putting an extra emphasis on the importance of preventative health, check-ups, and cancer screenings for all of the men in our lives. A 2019 study showed that 65% of men tend to wait as long as possible to see their doctor if they have any health symptoms or an injury and Hector’s story shows how true that statistic really is.
Hector had a lesion on his ear for 12 years before he took the encouragement from his family and went to the emergency room. At the ER, they were wanting him to see a dermatologist, but without health insurance, Hector didn’t think it would be possible. Luckily, he found Agape Family Health, our partner primary care clinic.
WeCareJax sent him to a dermatologist for biopsies and he was diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma. Hector received multiple surgeries from Baptist MD Anderson‘s ENT Oncology Surgeons. Since his ear was removed, he was also sent to Vision is Priceless for specialized glasses.
Hector’s family was so excited that the surgeries went well. They said, “They removed his ear and removed the lymph nodes, the cancer is in remission and no cancer has been found. WeCareJax has been so helpful to our family and you are all angels sent from heaven. There is no way we could repay you for everything you have done for us. Thank you for all of the wonderful work you do.”
