WeCareJax Board Member: Dr. Avis Boulter

Dr. Avis Boulter joined the WeCareJax Board of Directors in 2025, bringing over three decades of experience as a pediatric anesthesiologist and a deep commitment to advancing equitable health care access. A graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine, Dr. Boulter has spent her career serving children and families in the hospital and health care sector with exceptional clinical skill and compassion.

In addition to her medical career, Dr. Boulter has demonstrated a longstanding dedication to community service. Since 2018, she has served on the board of the Community Nutcracker—a beloved Jacksonville organization co-founded by WeCareJax founder Dr. George Trotter. Her leadership has helped support the arts while raising critical funds for local nonprofits, including those focused on health and human services.

Dr. Boulter’s unique blend of medical expertise and civic engagement enriches the WeCareJax mission to connect uninsured patients with life-saving specialty care. Her insight and passion are invaluable as we continue to serve Northeast Florida’s most vulnerable neighbors.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

You will find me dancing in my spare time. My greatest love is ballet. I have performed in the Community Nutcracker and Heather Loveland Dance Academy’s recital (and before that Mark Spivak’s) for many years. I still dance on point. I was in the 2022 First Coast DWTS and was 1st runner-up. I had a blast dancing Argentine Tango there. I also love Flamenco, Latin, West Coast Swing, Bollywood, & Zouk dancing.

How did you get involved with WeCareJax?

I was drawn to WeCareJax for many reasons. In 2018, I volunteered for the MASS Clinic when I first retired from my career as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist. It was so rewarding to help the patients at the clinic. They were so grateful to be seen despite waiting for hours. In November of 2024, I attended WeCareJax’s Caring Awards. I was so moved by the medical care and journey of one of your cancer survivors. That night I saw a video honoring WeCareJax’s founder, Dr. George Trotter. I cried. I had danced with George for years in the Community Nutcracker. We served together on the Community Nutcracker Board. I just realized that George was the founder of Community Nutcracker and WeCareJax. I missed him so much, but now I admired his vision and what he had accomplished even more. The need for free healthcare is urgent with the current loss of so many safety net providers and services. WeCareJax is so vital for the community. I was already interested in working with this amazing organization. After I met Executive Director, Angela Strain, and toured the facility, I was completely sure about my commitment.

Top 3 Favorite Things about Duval County:

I enjoy exploring our beautiful river and beaches, and old neighborhoods such as San Marco, Avondale, and Springfield. I like to check out art galleries, antique stores, live music, dance, or theater performances. I love the Alhambra Dinner Theater! I appreciate going to events unique to Jacksonville such as the Florida-Georgia Game, the Blue Angels Air Show, PorchFest, Jaguar games, the Jacksonville Symphony, Avondale Luminaries, 4th of July Fireworks, The Players Championship, Christmas Boat Parade, RAP Home Tours, or Deck the Chairs.
