Patient Success Story – Rebecca
“Rebecca” (name withheld for confidentiality) was referred from Baptist Beaches in early 2020 with a diagnosis of advanced stomach cancer. After enrolling in the WeCareJax Cancer Care Cohort for uninsured adults, she received surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation from our partner Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. They provided compassionate care at no cost to Rebecca or her family.
Due to COVID-19, shortly after Rebecca’s diagnosis, her husband found himself out of work. With no income, keeping up with rent and utility payments got harder and harder. WeCareJax reached out to BEAM, Mission House, JALA, and local churches to help the couple remain safely housed.
With donor support, co-pays for pain medications and colostomy supplies were also covered. With a grant from the FLASCO Foundation, gas cards supported transportation to appointments and treatment. Biweekly, low-touch, fresh produce deliveries through the Florida Blue, Farmers and You program offered additional support to help Rebecca and her husband during this challenging time.
Finally, at the end of her fight, Rebecca received palliative care from our partner, Community Hospice. Though her fight has now sadly ended, we are so grateful to every partner who helped make her remaining time a little easier.
Sometimes, patients need more than a specialty care appointment, and WeCareJax is so grateful for the collaboration from all of our community partners who use their strengths to help our neighbors in need.
